History Chess Players in the Wisła Colors March 2nd, 2010

The Sports Society Wisła is expanding its activities. By the resolution of the Board, a chess section has been established.

The Wisła chess players have very ambitious plans. First and foremost, they would like to engage as many children, youth, and adults as possible in the royal game. There is no doubt that nothing develops the intellect like the ability to move chess pieces and pawns across the sixty-four squares of the chessboard. In addition to educational and upbringing intentions, the section also has significant sports plans. Since the chess season corresponds with the calendar year, our team will not be able to participate in league competitions this year. However, next year, our chess players would like to enter the second division, and if everything goes as planned, they will try for promotion to the first division. From there, it would be only a step to the highest class of chess competitions in the country, the Extraleague. The chances of realizing this scenario are considerable. The initiator of the section's creation is the International Master Dariusz Mikrut (for those not familiar, the International Master title is the second-highest level of chess initiation - the only higher one is Grandmaster). Dariusz Mikrut is a seasoned player, winner of several international classical chess tournaments (including the Liberec Open 2007), and dozens of rapid chess tournaments. He was a three-time finalist in the Polish junior championships and a participant in the European Rapid Chess Championships. The second pillar of the section is Maciej Woźniak, a candidate for the title of National Master, and a two-time participant in the European Rapid Chess Championships. The mentioned players, along with Violetta Hosiawa, constitute the board of the newly established section.

It's worth mentioning that chess is not an unknown territory in the history of TS Wisła. From 1979 to 1989, there was a Chess Circle in the Physical Culture Promotion Section. Our chess players participated in regional competitions, achieving their greatest success in 1985 when the seniors took fourth place in the district league, and the juniors became vice-champions of the province. Individually, our players have repeatedly reached the podium at the provincial and Krakow championships. We hope that their successors will repeat these successes on a national scale, and who knows, maybe even on an international one.
