C.K. II School

Brief History of Real Schools

The real school was an educational reform initiated by Jan Julius Hecker. The first such school appeared in Berlin in 1747.

With the educational reform of 1840, schools in Poland were divided into philological and real schools. Philological schools were intended to prepare students for higher levels of gymnasiums, while real schools were designed "exclusively for practical subjects." This meant they prepared youth to be as valuable as possible to the state.

This was also true in Kraków, where two such schools were established. The First Real School was built between 1893 and 1895 (architect Stanisław Ciechanowski) at Plac Świerczewskiego 12 (now V LO, at Studencka Street). The Second Real School was located on Michałowskiego Street.

Imperial-Royal II Higher Real School in Kraków

The II Real School was established in 1902 and was initially a school with a mathematical and natural science profile. The institution was created by transforming an existing school located at Graniczna Street, which had been operational since 1899. Classes began in September 1903, with five hundred students starting the semester. The Imperial-Royal II Higher Real School was a secondary school, and its first director was Jan Bidziński. The institution was well-equipped, including having a spacious library.

In 1930, the school was renamed IX Mathematical-Natural Science Gymnasium in honor of J. Hoene-Wroński. Today, the site of the former II Real School is occupied by VII General Education High School.

From the very beginning of the school's operation in 1903, Professor Tadeusz Łopuszański taught there. He is a significant figure in the history of Wisła, as he proposed the formation of a sports club to his students in May 1906. Łopuszański taught at the school for six years.
